Differences between the three activation modes

Last Updated:10/18/2017

Question:

What are the differences between the three activation modes which enable to set when connecting the E8a/E8 by the High-performance Embedded Workshop?

Answer:

The specification of each mode which enables to set at “Emulator Setting (*1)” dialog box, which is displayed when connecting the E8a/E8 by the High-performance Embedded Workshop, is as follows.

  1. Erase Flash and Connect(*2)mode
This mode is used to write the E8a/E8 program to the MCU flash memory on connecting the E8a/E8. If it is first time to connect the E8a/E8 to a user system, select this mode. In this mode, all data of the MCU flash memory is erased after connecting.
  2. Keep Flash and Connect(*3)mode
This mode is used only when the E8a/E8 program has already written to the MCU flash memory. It is same behavior as the Erase Flash and Connect mode after connecting, but the MCU flash memory is not erased on connecting the E8a/E8. This mode is used to connect the E8a/E8 without erasing the MCU flash memory.
Note: Keep Flash and Connect mode is not available for the R8C/10, R8C/11, R8C/12, R8C/13 group.
  3. Program Flash(*4)mode
This mode is used to activate the E8a/E8 as a simple programmer. In this mode, program debugging is not available. The displayed value such as at memory window is dummy value. In this mode, all data of the MCU flash memory is erased by the E8a/E8 on connecting the E8a/E8.

Note: The above dialog box name and mode names are displayed as follows on an earlier version than the E8 emulator software V.2.09 Release 00
*1. Select Emulator Mode
*2. Download emulator firmware
*3. Does not download emulator firmware
*4. Writing flash memory
