What is the temperature change if output current changes from Io = 5 mA?

Latest Updated:12/01/2010

Question:

The temperature coefficient of output voltage for 3-terminal regulators is defined under the condition of Io = 5 mA. However, what is the temperature change when the output current changes?

Answer:

The temperature characteristics are determined only by the operating junction temperature (TJ) and do not change when the output current changes.
The temperature coefficient of output voltage is measured at Io = 5 mA simply because 5 mA is the current by which the heat is not generated as possible, to keep the ambient temperature as close to TJ as possible; there is no actual need to include this condition in the characteristics.
